Business Development Manager

Job Purpose: 

Our client is seeking a Business Development Manager to join the sales team within the public utilities metering sector. The role focuses on selling water and electricity metering solutions and related products to public utility customers, with a strong emphasis on municipalities and state-owned entities. The successful candidate will be based in Durban and will report directly to the Commercial Manager: Public Sector. The purpose of the role is to lead growth initiatives and drive high-value business development efforts within the public utilities metering sector. The Business Development Manager will identify market opportunities, forge strategic partnerships, oversee assigned accounts, and take ownership of achieving revenue growth while expanding market share.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive business development strategies targeting public sector utility customers.
  • Identify emerging market trends and opportunities for growth in water and electricity metering solutions.
  • Lead market intelligence activities, including competitor analysis and pricing strategy development.
  • Build, manage, and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders within municipalities and state-owned entities.
  • Represent the company in contract negotiations and strategic partnership discussions.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of complex tender responses, proposals, and technical presentations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (technical, operations, and finance) to ensure seamless solution delivery.
  • Develop annual business plans and revenue forecasts aligned to organisational objectives.
  • Provide regular performance and pipeline reports to management.
  • Monitor return on investment (ROI) for business development initiatives and adjust strategies where required.
  • Provide market and client feedback to product development and solutions teams to inform enhancements and innovation.
  • Support the launch of new products and services through strategic positioning and customer engagement.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sales, Business Administration, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 3–5 years’ experience in technical sales or business development within the public utilities sector
  • Proven track record of driving successful business development initiatives and achieving revenue growth
  • Strong understanding of public sector procurement and tendering processes
